BREAKING NEWS: JSC Responds to Petition seeking to Remove CJ Koome From Office: The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has come out to defend Chief Justice Martha Koome’s composition of the Tax Appeal Tribunal following a petition filed to remove the latter from office on Thursday.
In a statement issued by its registrar Winfrida Mokaya, the body held meetings on June 2, 2022, which resolved to appoint 21 members within the confines of the law.
While the petitioner claims that one more person was appointed, bringing the membership to 22, the Registrar revealed that Ann Waithera Githinji tendered her resignation as Secretary of the Tribunal on October 23, 2023, bringing the total number to 21, including the chairperson.
The registrar also stated that Ali Tanvir Mohsin, one of the Tribunal members, resigned in 2022 and was replaced by Elisha Njeru.
This comes after Michael Kojo Otieno, filed a petition seeking to eject Koome, citing that the Chief Justice had abused office by appointing two members to the Tribunal, outside the legally allowed parameters.
He claimed that Koome discriminated against persons who applied and is hence unfit to hold a public office.
