News Just in: Massive evictions looms after court rules on 29-acre land tussle: Over 1000 traders and residents are facing eviction after the High Court declared that they have been illegally living on a 29-acre land at Ngurubani town in Kirinyaga county.
Among the structures to be vacated include a mosque, churches, schools, a hospital, business premises and residential homes.
In her ruling, Chuka High Court Judge Justice Lucy Gitari stated that the respondents obtained the land illegally since the land was partitioned and sold after the owner had died and succession had not been done.
Justice Gitari noted that the land belonged to Ndege Warui and that one of his sons sold the land before the proper succession process was done.
Even so, the residents have protested the court’s judgment vowing to appeal the decision.
Kirinyaga Supkem chairman stated that they do not comprehend how the court disregarded their title deeds as mere papers despite presenting them as evidence.
They swore not allow anyone to demolish the mosque and homes citing that they are ready to fight for their rights until the end.
