African Union Adds New Gender Twist to Raila Commission Bid: The Executive Council Ministerial meeting has further tightened the race. The meeting was expected to tackle the matters of regional rotation and gender parity for equity in distribution of the AU leadership.
The outcome of the council gave the Eastern wing of the union the power to appoint the chairperson.
The Northern region was given a task of appointing the deputy chairperson whereas Western, Central and Southern regions will submit candidates for the remaining 6 posts.
However, A twist come in where the council provided that the two top positions should be held by different genders.
This means, if the elected chairperson is male, then his deputy must be female and vice versa
The statement read,”The Eastern region shall submit candidates for the position of the chairperson. The Northern region shall submit candidates for the position of the deputy chairperson,”
“Both regions can submit male and female candidates. The gender of the elected Chairperson will determine the gender of the Deputy Chairperson to be elected,” read part of the statement.
At the moment, international leaders such former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and his political counterpart President William Ruto have declared their support for Raila Odinga in the election that will take place in February 2025.
