Confusion As KNUT calls off planned strike; KUPPET Insists Strike is Still On: The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu on Sunday announced that the union had called off the teachers’ strike which was set to begin on Monday.
The Secretary General in a press conference therefore directed teachers affiliated with KNUT to report to schools for the third term following the withdrawal of the strike notice.
KNUT Sec Gen Oyuu Stated,”The NEC has, therefore, today August 25, 2024, agreed to withdraw the strike action notice which was elapsing midnight August 25, 2024, since we have commenced addressing the remaining matters administratively,”
“In light of the latest developments, we direct our teachers to resume duty effective Monday, August 26, 2024,” he added.
Meanwhile, KUPPET’s NEC had earlier on Sunday given the green light for the strike to proceed as planned.
KUPPET Stated,”There being no imminent resolution of the members’ grievances by the expiry of our Strike Notice, the meeting resolved to press ahead with the strike from Monday 26th August. The union will mobilise its members to fight hard for their labour rights until justice is attained,”
”The upcoming strike will be an effective tool to answer the long-standing demands of frustrated teachers who are under-paid, overworked and demotivated. The union is fighting for not only better pay for our members but also for improved facilities and more resources for schools,”
KUPPET NGC commended KESSHA for the excellent work they have done to advance education under challenging environments including insufficient resourcing in physical amenities, learning materials and teaching staff.
KUPPET Stated,”In this regard, we urge you to pay close attention to the safety of learners and other members of school communities including parents, members of the non-teaching staff and other service providers during the strike.
”While you explore effective ways to achieve these ends, we remind you of the risks of leaving students at the hands of Boards of Management (BOM) teachers, who do not fall under the purview of the TSC’s Code of Regulations, during industrial action,” read part of the statement.
