Former KEMRI Head and Renowned Immunologist Confirmed Dead: Former Kenya Medical Research Institute head and renowned immunologist Dr. Davy Koech has Passed on.
The 73 year old Doctor Died after Battling a long illness, family says
Koech is remembered for the significant contributions towards the global understanding of HIV/AIDS and other emerging tropical diseases during the 1980s and 1990s.
He was recognized internationally including a nomination for the Genius Laureate of the American Biographical Institute in 2006, and a place among the 500 Greatest Geniuses of the 21st Century.
Dr. Koech was the youngest medic to lead the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), an institution he co-founded with Prof. Mutuma Mugambi in 1979.
His academic journey began in his backyard before he pursued tertiary education at the University of Nairobi. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Zoology in 1974
Throughout his leadership, Dr. Koech Scaled KEMRI into an instituted of research and innovation, solely focused in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
He also chaired the Commission of Inquiry into Kenya’s Education System in 1999, termed as the Koech Report, which was aimed at improving the nation’s educational framework
