Members of Parliament Now Turn up Pressure Against Ruto
Members of Parliament Now Turn up Pressure Against Ruto demanding the filling of the vacant position of the Cabinet Secretary of Gender.
In a statement. KEWOPA highlighted that the position needed filling now, particularly in light of the recent rise in femicide and violence against women and girls. They also decried the little progress made in addressing the issues.
“In recent months, KEWOPA has raised concerns about the distressing rise in femicide and violence against women and girls, yet little progress has been made to address these issues,” the statement read.
“Our concerns are further heightened by the fact that the position of the Cabinet Secretary for Gender remains vacant,” the statement further added
The parliamentary association argued that the leadership vacuum is concerning as it is leading to the current happenings going unaddressed and a lack of action towards the same.
“This role is crucial, particularly now, in providing leadership for gender protection and empowerment policies, yet it remains unfilled amidst widespread gender violence,” they stated.
“The absence of a dedicated advocate at this level underscores a worrying lack of priority given to gender issues,” added KEWOPA.
The vacancy in the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts & Heritage was occasioned after President William Ruto dissolved his Cabinet in July 2024 after the aftermath of the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests. The immediate former officeholder was Aisha Jumwa.
