Over 20 Kenyan fishermen were killed at the Todonyang border point along Lake Turkana after suspected gunmen from a neighbouring country ambushed them and opened fire indiscriminately.
According to Reports, the heavily armed Dassanech militia stormed the area while the fishermen were engaged in their activities on Lake Turkana.
Further reports from local police suggest that the attack may have been a retaliatory strike following an earlier incident in which a well-known bandit shot and killed three Dassanech fishermen in Turkana on Saturday morning.
Speaking after the incident, Turkana North Member of Parliament Ekwon Nabuin called on the Ministry of Interior to respond to the incident, terming it a ‘massacre.’
”Ministry of Interior and National Administration we’re receiving disturbing reports of the killing of more than 20 fishermen in the Todonyang area of Lake Turkana by the Dassanech. The numbers could be higher,” Nabuin shared
“The situation is extremely bad, rescuers must move fast to secure our people. The massacre is happening on Kenyan soil which is occupied by well-armed militias (Dassanech) Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen,” he added.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at Lopeimukat and Natira along the Kenya-Ethiopia border near River Omo.
During the attack, five boats were ambushed, resulting in the deaths of everyone on board. The assailants also seized three firearms from the fishermen.
However, some survivors were rescued and immediately placed under the protection of the Lopeimakate Chief.
