A death certificate is a legal document that indicates how , when, where and who is the deceased.
According to section 17 of deaths and births, the registrar of deaths should be notified of the news a deceased person within 30 days.
The cabinet secretary for interior services ; Fred Matiangi’ announced that death and burial registration is available in all huduma centres countrywide.
It takes approximately three days to be able to access the death certificate.
Significance of a death certificate
1. Can be used to transfer insurance of the assets of the deceased
2.Can be used for personal reasons such as closure and acceptance of death
3.Can be used for court procedures and legal processes
4. It is an indication of death in the government of Kenya
5. Useful is transferring ownership title of the deceased to another person
The relatives of the deceased or significant others can access the death certificate at huduma centre, Civil office or Bishop’s office.
Requirements for access
1. Deceased’ s national identity card
If the deceased was an adult( 18 years and above) a national identity card helps identify the deceased was a citizen
2. A burial permit from the government
A burial permit is a pre- requisite document for application of a death certificate
3.Form D4
This a form from a civil registration which is used for application of a death certificate. It indicates the place of death, date of death, the sex of the deceased,Age and applicant’s name
4. Purpose for certification
The applicants how they are related to the deceased and they should clearly state why they are applying for the certificate

A death certificate in Kenya cost ksh. 50 , if the certificate has no amendments and 150 kes, if the certificate has got amendments.
