Residents of Nyakach in Kisumu County are reportedly living in fear following claims that a murder suspect is walking free after police officers attempting to arrest him were allegedly overpowered by a group of gangsters.
The suspect is said to be linked to the killing of a local elder who was reportedly attacked on Friday night while on a ‘Nyumba Kumi’ patrol in Kagak village alongside the area chief and assistant chief.
Sources indicate that officers from Oboch Police Station, led by OCS Ogoro attempted to apprehend the suspect on Monday but reports suggest that a group of individuals, believed to have been posing as boda boda riders, allegedly confronted the officers.
It has been claimed that despite being fully armed, the officers were seemingly outnumbered, with reports indicating they were forced to retreat. The suspect escaped during the commotion.
Reports further suggest that one officer sustained injuries after being struck with stones and was later taken to Nyabondo Mission Hospital for treatment.
Some locals have expressed concerns, alleging that the suspects have been spotted in the area and are said to be issuing threats to residents.
Fears are rife that the situation could escalate if urgent measures are not taken to address the insecurity in the area.
