Mombasa port being the largest in the coastal regoing has been facing major competition from neighbouring ports such as Dar es salaam in tanzania, Maouto in Mozambique and Berbera in Somaliland.
The three countries, Tanzania, Somaliland and Mozambique are currently invested in expanding and improving the existing ports as new technology comes in inorder to identify as the best.
Kenya on the other hand has been experiencing difficulties. This is due to congestion, delays and also mismanagement. This was a statement released by the Genius Business Systems.

According to the report, the same investments made in other region to work on their infrastructure and rehabilitation are working tremendously unlike The Mombasa port.
In the report,” The traditonal dominance of the port of Mombasa is being challenged by other regional facilities that are attracting more investment and are less resistant to reform, while entirely new deep water seaports are being constructed to diversify regional trade and shipping routes.”
The report continues to state how Kenya is loosing rank to Lamu which is a chinese operated port.
“If Mombasa does not attract fresh investment, it will lose its ranking to Chinese- operated Lamu port and other regional facilities,” The report wrote
The Mombasa port is being ranked 293 out of 370, this has been stated as being caused by congestion and pooor management.
Somaliland seems to be doing well. The report stated that when the construction is complete, Berbera port will be able to handle 3 million 20-foot equivalent units annually which is three times the current capacity of regional heavy weight.
Ethiopia also has been seen as committed to investing in its port. This is in terms of infrastructure , the construction of the Berbera corridor which is a major trade gateway.
