In a tweet, the directorate of criminal investigation has confirmed the rescue of a girl who was about to undergo FGM at Naira Sirasa, Narok county.
The girl who was a form two student at a high schools in Nakuru county learnt of the hatched plan by the parents to undergo Female genital mutilation without her consent.
The female genital mutilation was banned by the government of Kenya because of the health implications it had on the girls. However, regardless of the efforts made by the government to create awareness on the ban against FGM, some communities in Kenya are still practicing it.
The girl, through a phone call alerted her school head girl. The girl was to undergo the prohibited procedure on 4th August 2022.
Immediately the head girl alerted the detectives about the plan through the anonymous hotline and a team was dispatched to Narok county where the girl resides.
According to the detectives, “The girls is now safely in our hands as detectives secure a safe house to accommodate her for the time being.
The directorate of criminal investigation further stated that, the parents of the girl have been arrested awaiting for trials also as investigations are underway.
The stated, “Meanwhile, her parents have since been arrested and are currently in custody assisting detectives with investigations.”
The detectives went ahead to praise the head girl for a job well done, she rescued the girl who was about undergo a procedure not only prohibited by the government of Kenya but also a very inhumane act.
They said,”We thank the head girl of the school who went beyond the call of her duty, by reaching out to our officers too rescue her school mate from the retrogressive act.”
The girl is currently under a children protection unit provided by the detectives.
