Yesterday, The Azimio la Umoja coalition filed a presidential results petition at Milimani law courts.
The case that will be presided over by judges from the supreme court, headed by Chief Justice Martha Koome. However, IEBC has had concerns incase of a presidential re-run.
What if the supreme court nullifies the presidential results , that will lead to presidential election do over? How much Money IEBC will spend incase of a presidential re-run?
In a statement by lawmaker, Mboya, He stipulated that with the current economic trend in Kenya, it would be costly to run a presidential election again.
He stated that, the exercise will be more costly thsn the re-run that was done in 2017. This was when CORD leader, Raila Odinga filed a presidential petition against the Outgoing president , Uhuru Kenyatta of Jubilee coalition.
Lawmake Mboya said,”Should there be a re-run, then it would cost more than what IEBC spent in the previous re-run when Supreme Court overturned President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win in 2017. This will be based on various factors including the high cost of living and the value of the Kenyan shilling.”
In 2017, according to reports , the independent electoral and boundaries commission, spent a total amount of ksh. 12 billion to cater for the presidential re-run.
He, Mboya however, said that a re-run is a bit cheaper than the general elections because its a repeat of what had already been done.
He said,”Re-run is a bit cheap than a General Election because in this case, it will be a repeat presidential election.”
The Independent electoral and boundaries commission, incase of a presidential do over, will be expected to mobilise more staffers to preside over the exercise.
The electoral commission will also be required to print more electoral papers for the two top candidates in the first round of presidential results.
