The digital number plates has inbuilt security features that allows the traffic enforcement authorities to track how the car runs and who has ownership over it.
This digital number plates are in line with the traffic act 2016. Some features of the plates are to be viewed physically but others will only be accessible to the security authority.
Cabinet secretary for security stated that upon arriving at the port, all cars will receive the digitalized number plates from the authorities.
Apart from fraud and crime, the digital number plates are to track those drivers that evade paying their taxes.
Matiangi stated,”The work is being done by a multi agency unit of the security sector and is part of the reforms initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta after the 2019 Dusit attack.”
He also said,”The capability allows us to change to the country’s 4.8 million vehicles within to the new generation plates within 12 months but that has been extended to a period of 18 months.”
He further urged Kenyan car owners to comply to the new policy when the national transport and services agency calls upon.
He stated,”When the NTSA team calls on Kenyans to change the plates, let us obey and get it done within those 18 months.”
Transport cabinet secretary, James Macharia, who was part of the launching also stated that the initiative will be in line with the traffic act of 2016 , 12 categories of vehicles will be covered and monitoring of vehicles will be easier.
Echoeing his words is the information and communication cabinet secretary, Joe Mucheru.
He said,”They form a basis for tracking and monitoring vehicles in the country which have risen significantly from 3.2M million last year to 4.8 million this year.”
