EPRA addresses reports of fuel hike in September.
The energy and petroleum regulatory authority, EPRA addresses reports of increasing fuel price in the month of September.
Speaking on Wednesday at a stakeholders meeting, EPRA director general, Daniel Kiptoo stated that the authority serves both the local and transit market.
He also revealed that EPRA is trying to strike a balance between regulating fuel prices and maintaining its infrastructure.
He said,”We are not competing just amongst ourselves but in other regions. We look at this in the bigger picture, how are we remaining competitive as a region to not only serve the local market but transit market as we look at the tariff review.”
He added,”We also look at how do we strike a balance with KPC as our licensee and investor, we need to ensure that the systems they run are technically sound. That will require investment.”
As of now, a litre of petrol goes for ksh.159.12, Kerosene for ksh 127.94 and diesel for ksh.140.00 in Nairobi county.
Zilper Odongo, KPC customer relations manager stated that fuel hike in effected by a number of factors.
She said,”The pipeline capacity doesn’t directly impact the fuel as there are other dynamics such as oil and gas, not just in Kenya but internationally. The tariff doesn’t have anything to do with the supply and demand beyond the pump prices that we have.”

EPRA has although promised to do a public participation test before amending the hike fuel prices.
Daniel Kiptoo said, ”It is a requirement in law that we subject the proposal to public participation to incorporate the views of members of the public, before the new tariffs are operationalized.”
New fuel prices will be announced next week on Wednesday 14th after EPRA conducts its reviews.
