Wetangula declared National Assembly speaker.
Former Bungoma senator, Moses Wetangula declared national assembly speaker. This is after Kenneth Marende withdrew in the second round.
The announcement was given to the acting parliament clerk by Suna East member of parliament, Junet Mohammed.
Clerk said,”I hereby declare Moses Wetangula as the 8th speaker of the National Assembly.”
Wetangula was sworn in immediately as Justin Muturi handed over power to him.
Muturi said,”As you assume the office and embark on discharging the duties of the speaker, I trust that you will find this set of past rulings by your predecessors most useful. Congratulations Mr speaker.
Moses Wetangula garnered a total of 215 votes while Kenneth Marende scored 130 votes.
However, before the voting , Moses Wetangula’s eligibility was questioned by the likes of John Mbadi and Moses Kajwang.
Kajwang said,”The Speaker to which he delivered his resignation letter (as Senator) was already a governor. Wetangula is not eligible to become a Speaker.”
Backing up Moses Wetangula’s speaker race was Aden Duale and Ichungwah who said the allegations are opaque.
Ichungwah said, “What TJ Kajwang is purporting can only be described as opaque.
Dual added,”Moses Wetangula ceased to be the Senator of Bungoma on the 9th of August… before he submitted his resignation, Wetangula has been a senator-elect and therefore not a state officer.”

Clearing the doubts, Kioko stated that she has receipts from the independent electoral and boundaries commission, stating that Wetangula was cleared to vie for the speaker post.
She said,”I am in receipt of a letter dated August 29 from Moses Wetangula in which he communicated to the Speaker of Senate his decision to resign as Senator-elect of Bungoma. I have satisfied myself that Moses Wetangula is qualified to vie as Speaker of the National Assembly.”
