Kahi Indimuli, the head of Kenya secondary’s heads association stated that the government needs to lay out plans on the transition process, CBC financing and capacity building of teachers.
The school heads want proper interpretation of the curriculum, CBC structure and even the quality assurance.
However, their main worry is the amount of time it will take to implement the CBC changes after the review.
The time does not favor the system since the first class is expected to do a transition come next year January.
Kahi said,”Putting a task force at this point in time may take a whole year and we have a transition to take. Maybe it would take some kind of a working committee to address a few areas regarding CBC implementation.”
Mr. Kahi advised the president to prioritize the areas that the school heads listed before for address.
He further warned that any major changes to the competence based curriculum( CBC) will bring an academic crisis to the country.
He said,” The CBC curriculum is good. CBC requires us to identify competencies, nurture these competencies and allow children to pick the various pathways. CBC is more child centered as opposed to teacher centered. 8-4-4 is a structure of education.
Earlier, education cabinet secretary, Goerge Magoha had stated that CBC is the best curriculum that equips learners with the knowledge that is needed for this changing world.
Magoha said,” The current environment is radically different from what the 8-4-4 system of education was created to respond to. We are now in a knowledge-based society faced with constantly changing challenges, constraints and opportunities. This needs a new kind of education.”
