Mulwa showed concerns on the number of girls taking the pill carelessly. He stated that the statistics have gone up since the drug is readily available on the counter.
He said,”It should be a maximum of three times a year. Our girls and young women are using it weekly. On Monday, if you look at the statistics they will tell you every Monday or weekends there is an upsurge in the use.”
Mulwa added,”They are legally available in the market but they are being abused and they are going to cause problems of fertility and health problem to the abusers.”
Mulwa further revealed that there’s an illegal drug being sold in the country to women as an emergency pill.
He stated that the drug is believed to be a chinese herb that is taken once a month to prevent pregnancy.
The ministry warned users against using the drug. It contains high levels of estrogen and progesterone that can be harmful to the body.
Mulwa said,”As we talk of the Chinese herbal drug I am more worried about abuse of the emergency contraception.”
The ministry added ,”The analysis showed that the tablet is not herbal at all. It contains very high levels of estrogen and progesterone that are toxic to a lot of people. We have seen children being born and they develop precautious puberty.”
