IEBC sets date for Kandara, Elgeyo Marakwet and Garissa Towship By elections; the seats fell vacant after Leaders took up the cabinet secretary roles.
Kandara MP Alice Wahome resigned after being approved as the Water, Sanitation and Irrigation CS.
Aden Duale resigned to take up the ministry of defence, cabinet secretary position.
Kipchumba Murkomen also resigned to work as the roads and transport cabinet secretary.
The Independent electoral and boundaries commission chairman, Wafula Chebukati gazetted the dates for by- elections of the three areas.
The chairman stated the date for the by-elections in the areas to be on January 5, 2023.
Wafula stated,”Following declaration of vacancies that occurred in the office of Members of National Assembly for Kandara and Garissa Township constituencies, Member of Senate for Elgeyo Marakwet County and Member for Shella Ward, Lamu County Assembly as confirmed by the respective Speakers vide letters dated 27th October 2022 for Parliamentary elections and 24th October 2022 for the County Assembly election, there shall be by-elections for Members of National Assembly for Kandara and Garissa Township constituencies, Member of Senate for Elgeyo Marakwet County and Member for Shella Ward in Lamu County.”
Chebukati also stated that public officers intended to contest, to resign from public office within seven days of the declaration of the vacancy by the Speaker.
Each political party intending to vie in the by-elections, to submit the names of the candidates contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before 14th November 2022.
