Citizens to arrest criminals; Nakuru county police head states.
Speaking on Monday, November 14, Nakuru county police boss, Mwanzo posed on why citizens would sit and watch their fellows being mugged.
He argued that this actions are a way of encouraging gangs to keep fueling crimes as they capitalise on fear to insert terror.
Mwanzo stated,”You cannot watch as your fellow Kenyan is being attacked because today it is him or her and tomorrow it will be you. Help the victim and chase after the thief so that he does not harm someone else.”
He argued that the law allows citizens to arrest this criminals. He added that the police officer to members of the public ratio is not the same, therefore, asked Kenyans to help the criminals who are exploiting innocent Kenyans.
He said,”The law allows citizens to arrest criminals under the Arrest By Members of the Public clause. They can arrest them and bring them to the police because we are not gods, we cannot be everywhere.”
Additionally, Mwanzo defended the OCS in Bondeni, who stated that citizens should lynch criminals through mob Justice.
Mwanzo said,”What he referred to was collective action by members of the public when pursuing a criminal. But why are we defending criminals?”
“The only person who understands the wrath of a criminal is either a victim or the police officers because we are usually the first to report to the scenes,” Mwanzo added.
He further opinioned that the government is willing to protect witnesses to curb the surging crime rate in the country.
