Our people must be compensated first- Kalonzo issues demands to president Ruto.
Wiper party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka has issued demands to president Ruto regarding the construction of the multi- billion dam.
Kalonzo stated that the president must make sure compensation for each and every family that is going to be affected in the proposed Sh425 billion High Grand Falls Dam.
Yesterday, the wiper leader threatened to lead a demonstration if the governor displaces the families without compensation.
He said,”People must be given adequate monetary compensation so that they can choose where to resettle and not be forced into a settlement scheme.”
In as much as the government is formulating projects to mitigate the ongoing drought, including building of dams, many residents of Tharaka Nithi, Kitui and Embu counties will be required to relocate and make room for the project.
The dam is characterized by High Grand Falls dam and hydro power plant with ancillary installations; and the downstream area irrigation schemes, pumping station, flood protection infrastructure and rural domestic water supply.
“Our people must be compensated first,” Kalonzo insisted.
The dam is part of the Sh1.5 trillion Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) corridor projects that are expected to help Kenya achieve its Vision 2030.
The dam is also expected to generate 1,000MW of electricity. The construction is likely to begin in the year 2024.
