January 2nd and December 27 th declared public holidays.

January 2nd and December 27th have been declared public holidays by the Interior cabinet secretary, Kithure Kindiki.

In a press release, the ministry explained Dec 26th and Jan 1st are public holidays which fall on the weekends, therefore, making the next first day of the week a holiday.

This directive falls under section 4 of the Public Holidays Act that stipulates that if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the next or first after the weekend will automatically become a public holiday.

The section reads,”Where, in any year, a day in Part I of the Schedule falls on a Sunday, then the first succeeding day, not being a public holiday, shall be a public holiday and the first-mentioned day shall cease to be a public holiday.”

This was also confirmed by the Kenya bankers association, who stated that they will be closed on both days.

The association stated,”The Kenya Bankers Association wishes to confirm that Tuesday, 27th December 2022, is a Public Holiday to mark Christmas Day pursuant to section 4 of the Public Holidays Act when a public holiday falls on a Sunday.”

“The same will apply to Monday, January 2, 2023, with respect to new year’s holiday,”they added.
