JSS is both free and compulsory-CS Machogu clarifies.
Education cabinet secretary, Ezekiel Machogu has spoken on admissions, fees and textbooks for junior secondary schools.
Speaking during a tour at Nairobi primary school, Machogu stated that 100 per cent transition from primary school to junior secondary was expected because the government had budgeted for it.
Additionally he cautioned schools demanding money from parents to enroll their kids in junior secondary school.
He stated,” In Kenya, JSS is both free and compulsory. There is no money to pay for registration, and there are no unnecessary levies as registration fees.”
He also stated that all pupils in Junior secondary school will be supplied with text books from the government, apart from students in public schools.
He added,” We’ve established when our jss students should be at school; the regular school calendar runs from 8:00 AM to 3:45 PM.”
“The curriculum should be sufficiently covered without subjecting children to mental torture,” Machogu stated.
The cabinet secretary also issued a warning to teachers who are planning to send away students because they do not have the required school uniform.
He stated,”We don’t expect kids to be sent away because of uniforms. There will be no requirements from specific shops, parents will be able to shop wherever they want.”
