We must continue to resolve injustices- Ruto fulfills his promise to the Pemba community.
In a gazette notice yesterday, 30th Monday 2023, President William Ruto has affirmed that the Pemba community was part of the 16 swahili tribes in Kenya.
He stated that the Pemba community will now be issued with Identification cards according to the law of Kenya.
Additionally, The Pemba community will, from now on be recognized and its members be part of the Kenyan citizenship.
He stated,”The Pemba people from the Coast of Kenya be recognised as an ethnic group in Kenya and be issued with relevant identification documents in accordance with the constitution and the law.”
“I proclaim an order that all persons, Bodies, and Authorities within the Republic of Kenya shall recognise the Pemba Community as an ethnic community of Kenya,”he added.
This comes after the community aired that they have been excluded from the development of the nation and are unable to benefit from the resources like other communities.
The united nations higher commission for refugees president has commended the president for the move.
UNCHR stated,”We are grateful to the government of Kenya for ending decades of marginalisation for the Pemba community by recognizing them as an ethnic community in Kenya.”
“This decision will ensure they get access to the rights and services they deserve. The Pemba community can now claim to be a part of something,” they added.
During his Jamhuri day speech, the head of stated promised to render justices to the pemba community by conferring them their citizenship.
He stated,”We must continue to resolve injustices of a historical character that have unfairly relegated people to the margins of statelessness when their inalienable rights of citizenship are guaranteed under the Constitution.”
