We call on partners to support us in saving lives- Ruto calls for aid.
President Ruto calls on well wishers to support Kenya in fighting drought and hunger in arid and semi arid areas.
He said that since the conditions were worsening as days go by, the partners could come on board and raise long term strategies to battle this crisis.
He stated,”We call on partners, the private sector and well-wishers to step forward and support us in saving lives and building long-term resilience.”
”We are facing devastating drought that has led to widespread distress and suffering. This crisis is worsening and requires urgent scale up of interventions.Kenya commits to fully account for the donated resources,” he added.
This comes after the head of state received the 2022 Short Rains (October to December) Assessment Report.
According to statistics from National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) , drought in Kilifi, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, Wajir, Isiolo, Kitui and Kajiado counties has reached the alarming state.
Other counties such as Embu, Narok, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Meru, Nyeri and Lamu counties are in the alert drought phase.
Additionally, The 2022 Long Rains Food and Nutritional Security Assessment Report reveals that a total of 4.35 million people are affected by the drought.
In the mitigation efforts, National Steering Committee on Drought Response has so far raised Sh650 million.
Atleast 85,000 people from the five counties( Mandera, Kitui, Kilifi, Samburu and Meru)have received food donations from the task force interventions.
