Through the embassy, China finally breaks silence on the issue of China square.
In the statement that was released on Wednesday, the chinese embassy stated that it is in full support of China-Kenya trade relations and its citizens conducting business in the country in line with Kenyan laws.
They however, pleaded with the government, to protect the rights of the Chinese even as they promote trade in Kenya.
They urged the government to create a business friendly environment that will promote China- Kenya practical cooperation.
The statement read,”At the same time, we hope that the Kenyan government will protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises and Chinese citizens and create an inclusive and friendly business environment so as to better promote China-Kenya practical cooperation and bring benefit to our two countries and two people.”
This comes after China square shut down it’s operations indefinitely citing that they needed to restrategize and also for security reasons.
They stated,”We, China Square Limited, regret to inform you that we will continue to close down for further notice.”
” We need to close down and give a cooling down period,” the owner Lei cheng added.
China square opening its doors and being labelled as the cheapest supermarket, has not sat well with local traders.
Traders from Nyamakima and Kamukunji areas, on Tuesday led protests with banners written “ Stop China Invasion”
