Why Maseno university student was shot dead amidst yesterday’s protests.
According to reports, the student was shot in the neck after protesters invaded Maseno Police Line in Kisumu. He was rushed to Coptic Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The reason why maseno university student was shot dead is because the police were using live bullets to disperse the youths who had overpowered them.
Additionally, 10 houses at Maseno Police Line were allegedly vandalised during the anti-government protests.
The report reas,”The students lit bonfires and barricaded Kisumu-Busia road using stones. They (students) overpowered the officers who were manning the station. The officers had run out of teargas canisters.”
The rowdy youths also stormed into a local supermarket other business entities along the Kisumu-Busia highway where they destroyed and stole goods of unknown value.
Kisumu governor, Anyang’ Nyongo has condemned this acts saying police should protect instead of Killing.
He stated that police have several of dispersing rowdy crowds such as use of teargas and rubber bullets, instead of resulting into live bullets
Governor Nyongo stated,”It is unfortunate that instead of using tear gas or rubber bullets, the police chose to fire live ammunition at the students.”
The governor additionally called for probe and arrest of the police officer who fired and killed the third year student.
“As we send messages to the family of the slain student and the Maseno University fraternity, we demand that the police officer who fired the killer bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible,”he added.
Condemning the same, was Embakasi east member of parliament, Babu Owino who decried the actions of the police saying comrades only wanted to protest the high cost of living.
He stated,”Police killed a student from Maseno University. So sad to educate a child to the university and lose him in the hands of a police officer who swore to protect lives.
“The only offence this comrade committed was to complain of going without food becaue of the high cost of living,” he added.
