There will be demonstrations in Kisumu tomorrow- Raila responds
Speaking at Capital Hill offices after a meeting with the Catholic church leaders led by Bishop Anthony Muheria, Azimio la umoja leader, Raila Odinga stated that the Kisumu demos are on as planned.
This comes after the Kisumu county governor, Anyang’ Nyong’o stated that he has banned all protests from happening in his county.
However, Raila has come out to clarify that he has spoken to hon. Anyang regarding the demonstrations and he is on board, which means Kisumu people are free to protest tomorrow.
He stated,”We want to take this opportunity to thank Kenyans who have been coming to our meetings. That was an announcement today by the governor of Kisumu about the demonstration in Kisumu.”
“We have talked with him and he has asked us to announce that there will be demonstrations in Kisumu tomorrow with the rest of the country,” he added.
He cited that his protests are in accordance with article 37 of the constitution and they will be peaceful as promised.
He stated,”They will be peaceful. According to article 37 of our constitution, these demonstrations must be peaceful. We want to urge those who are planning to disrupt thyme to disease to do so.”
Governor Nyongo on his part stated that he is aware that goons have been hired to cause mayhem, but Kenyans must fight for their rights.
He urged the police to let citizens protest in peace and protect them incase there’s chaos.
He stated,”We know that goons have been hired to disrupt the peaceful protests but we urge our people to not allow them to do so.
“We urge you to turn out in large numbers, we call upon the police to ensure peace and security during the demonstrations,” Nyong’o added.
The governor further highlighted that it is not easy especially with businesses being closed down because of protests, but he stated things will go on normally.
He stated,” It is not an easy balance between fighting for rights and enjoying the fruits of that fight. Losing revenue is painful even for me and we took that into consideration by making sure productivity in terms of work continues.”
