We were going for success, we met death- survivor from Pwani university accident recounts.
A journey that began from Kilifi county, on board Were 120 learners, four drivers and one sports officer. A bus full of happy faces going for their sports nationals at Eldoret.
The accident happened at Kayole area, along the Nairobi -Nakuru Highway between a Pwani University bus and a PSV vehicle. The tragic accident claimed a total of 14 lives on the spot.
A second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Philosophy, Ian Okoth who is also a footballer, recounts the wreckage that saw him loose him school mates.
He stated,”We were going for success. We met death. I’ m grateful that I survived.”
Ian narrates that the team was in high spirit, until they realized that the driver has lost control of the brakes, that’s when he fastened his seat belt and started praying.
He stated,“I didn’t know it would be the end of seeing some of my colleagues who were very jovial a few moments ago. The team was in high spirit.”
Dorothy Chemos, a volley baller also narrated that they were in separate buses.Male and female footballers were in the bus that had the accident.
She narrated,“I only remember seeing the driver of the ill-fated bus overtaking us on the wrong side at a high speed and wondered what could be happening. In the confusion of the moment, our driver slowed down as we started reaching out to our colleagues on the other bus.
“when we stopped we only saw a group of people quickly gathering ahead of us and we disembarked, we realised that the other bus that had some of our colleagues had perished as the school bus lay by the ditch.”
Currently, 86 people who sustained injuries lying at Nakuru sub- county hospital. The hospital Med sup revealed that 16 fatalities had been recorded by Thursday evening.
