Mukumu girls closed indefinitely after outbreak kills girls, leaves others in hospital beds.
A school in western, Mukumu girls closed indefinitely, this comes after two students suspected of food and water poisoning died.
The Western region’s education director, Jared Obiero, while visiting the school yesterday, stated that the ministry of health is still investigating what caused the outbreak that has caused inconveniences to the school.
Initially, the number of students sent to hospital with diarrhoea, vomiting and dizziness was 124 but unfortunately cases got intense and worse, made the number to double. The students also complained of fatigue and shortness of breath.
However, as of now, the majority of the students, have been discharged from the Kakamega County General Teaching & Referral Hospital and St Elizabeth Mukumu Mission Hospital, and only 25 are still in hospital.
The principal, Fridah Ndolo confirmed that the two students who died were in Form One W and Form Two C.
She stated,”Let’s pray for our students and the Mukumu community. If we take a child home for treatment let us take her to hospital and monitor her. We have lost two students. God, give us grace and wisdom to go through this trying moment. May the departed souls find eternal peace.”
Senator Boni Khalwale who also visited the school last Friday, asked the Ministry of Health to close it to avoid a health crisis. He stated that serious measures should be taken to address the underlying cause of the sickness.
Samples were collected and sent to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) for analysis, however, health workers in Kakamega hospital indicated cases of food and water poisoning.
