Disquiet over IG Koome’s order to police on teargas.
Disquiet over IG Koome’s order; Chemical Warfare and Medical experts on Friday, April 7, raised concerns, stating that Kenya was in violation of an International Treaty over the use of banned weapons.
According to experts, the inspector general of police, committed serious crime over using tear gas on protestors.
The experts highlighted that according to the 1925 Geneva Protocol that categorised tear gas as a chemical warfare tool, stated that it only must be used on civilians and soldiers.
Respiratory specialist Oduor stated,”A significant amount of tear gas inhalation will have both short-term and long-term effects on the nose, eyes and the lungs.”
“Tear gas is a serious danger to those with pre-existing conditions such as an asthma and other pulmonary diseases,” Oduor adds.
Expert Musamali raised that it was the responsibility of the IG to make sure the warfare tool was used responsibly, not to affect mothers and even their children.
He stated,”It was the commander’s responsibility to ensure that tear was used in a measured way that does not affect everyone, including the little children.”
This comes after a mother in Kibra lost her kid due to the effects of the teargas, during Raila’s mass action.
The mother narrated,”The baby started excreting form in his nose, and it became clear that my baby was in immense danger but there were running battles that prevented me from immediately taking him to the hospital.”
