We have had challenges because the President made a conscious decision- DP Gachagua.
Speaking at the conference with Deputy Governors in Mombasa County, the second in command, Rigathi Gachagua, claimed that Uhuru occasionally took loans from local banks to pay the salaries of civil servants.
He stated,”Last month we had challenges because the previous administration used to borrow money from banks linked to the same leaders and we said no to it.”
The deputy president highlighted that the previous regime had so many mistakes including the one of addressing delays in salaries instead of borrowing.
Hon. Gachagua expressed that salaries is still an issue because president Ruto decided to use the long term solution of not borrowing like Former president Uhuru Kenyatta always did.
He stated,” is true that we have had challenges because the President has made a conscious decision that it is not prudent for the government to borrow money from banks at 14 per cent interest to pay salaries.”
“We have agreed as a government that the only way to restore the economy of the country to where President Mwai Kibaki left it is to fund the budget through revenue collection,” he added.
Notably, the deputy president encouraged deputy governors to work in sync with the governors.
He stated,” I met the Deputy Governors in Mombasa during their consultative convening on devolution, which I opened this morning, and encouraged them to work with and support their Governors to deliver results to the people.”
“ At the National level, we will continue strengthening devolution by cementing the working relationship for the benefit of the people,” he added.
