Diwali monday is not a public holiday.
Sources privy to the standard media have stated that Diwali monday is not a public holiday.
The interior ministry informant stated,”Monday (October 24) will be a normal workday. The government won’t gazette it as a public holiday. It could be an occasion celebrated by Hindus in Kenya and other parts of the world, but as per the government’s holidays calendar, it won’t be celebrated by all Kenyans countrywide.”
Diwali is a hindu celebration of lights, which also marks the Beginning of Indians’ financial year.
The festival lasts for five days, or six in some regions of India, and is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika.( October- November).
In 2019 and 2021, speculations of Diwali being a public holiday trended online. This prompted the interior CS, Fred Matiang’i to release a statement saying Diwali is marked by Indians only, not every Kenyan.
Matiang’i stated,”The Kenyan law says the five days of Diwali may in every year be public holidays for all persons belonging to the Hindu faith and not all Kenyans.”
