Gov’t to stop funding students in private universities.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has stated that the gov’t to stop funding students who qualify for public universities but decide to join Private universities.
While appearing before the Public Investment Committee on Governance and Education on Thursday, he cited that through this, the government will ensure all students are placed in public institutions.
This comes after lawmakers complained that over the Ksh.20 billion was being used to cater for students meant to be in public universities but studying in private universities.
Machogu stated,”We are speaking the same language, we have said that the government is going to place all students into public universities unless a parent has requested otherwise, that we have said and that is now our policy.”
“Those already in private universities, we will ensure they finish their studies, but we commit that in this placement all students will go to public universities,” he added.
This comes after president Ruto invented a new financial model for funding public universities and TVETs.
He stated that the Vulnerable and extremely needy students will not pay fees effective this year, according to a new model of funding university education.
The head of state revealed that the funding will be through government scholarships, loans and bursaries.
He said students from needy households joining universities will receive Government scholarships of up to a maximum of 53 per cent and loans of up to 40 per cent.
Their households, the President explained, will only pay seven per cent of the cost of their university education.
