I must disabuse people of equating Azimio to criminals- Sifuna decries.
Nairobi county senator, Edwin Sifuna, has decried that it is sad that people are viewing Azimio la umoja protests as crime.
The senator stated that apart from the police causing mayhem, their demonstrations are under article 37 of the constitution.
He highlighted that if anyone thinks they can ban the protests that are guided by the law, then they are wrong for that matter.
Sifuna further stated that they have no desire to destroy anyone’s property and looting thar has happened in the past protests.
He stated,”As Azimio, we are not saying we are going to invade people’s supermarkets and businesses because that is criminal. We are saying we have a right for protests and anyone who says can ban protests is lying to themselves.”
The senator also called out institutions that are taking sides in the protests and viewing them as criminals.
He stated,“I must disabuse people of equating Azimio to criminals. Most of the organizations that are voicing and adding their voice into the happenings NCIC, Churches, I think they are getting it wrong.”
“If you can compare the invasion of private property after someone announces they will invade to when someone says they will hold peaceful demonstrations and say it is the same thing, then you are getting it wrong,” Sifuna added.
Notably the senator highlighted that anyone who approaches him to have dialogue about the protests, will be dismissed.
He stated,”As the Secretary General of ODM and leader of the senate, when someone comes to tell me to call off protests I will dismiss you immediately.”
