Importing the maize will hurt maize prices- Cherargei on GMOs.
Nandi senator, Samson Cherargei, has showed his concerns over the reinstatement of genetically modified foods.
Taking it to his social media, Cherargei stated that reinstatement will be a bad move, especially for farmers in his county who are about to harvest.
Cherargei stated,”When we were planting maize we spent about Ksh7,000 on fertiliser per bag. The price of petrol was also high. Importing the maize will hurt maize prices in the country and our farmers will not get returns for their sweat.”
The senator further added that, the move will not only demoralize farmers, but also reduce the crop production that is meant to be increased in the country.
He said,”It will demoralise our farmers. MPs from the Rift Valley region will be sitting with the two CSs by Tuesday to address this matter.”
The genetically modified foods, have solicited alot of opinions, with the opposition championing for them to remain banned.
Raila stated,”GMOs are dangerous to both human and animal lives and they have been banned in major European countries and Americas.”
