Interior CS Kindiki Issues an ultimatum; The cabinet secretary stood his ground and stated that the government will not allow a section of individuals to push this country into anarchy.
This comes after tea plucking machines were burnt down and other properties were destroying , as the residents were protesting.
He highlighted that in order to contain the situation, a number of officers have been sent to the areas, to maintain law and order.
The interior cabinet secretary also held closed-door meeting with tea estate representatives, local political leaders and religious leaders
He stated,”We will not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands. The theft and destruction of property cannot continue.”
“We have instructed the regional security and intelligence team in Rift Valley to camp in the South Rift until the matter is contained permanently,” he added.
CS Kindiki revealed that the looting, destroying of property and even the protests, were being fuelled by local politicians and business leaders. So far, 24 people had already been arrested over the destruction of property of the tea estates.
The residents based their protests on the fact that the introduction and usage of tea-plucking machines has rendered a number of them jobless.
Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has urged residents to hold their horses as the leaders work on an amicable and permanent solution to their concerns.
He stated,” As we continue deliberating on the issues you have raised, you must desist from destroying people’s property.
