Kenyans warned against eating chicken and pork sold in supermarkets; Details.
Kenyans warned against eating meat from supermarkets this is According to a report from the Kenya medical research institute and world animal protection centre for microbiology research.
They outlined that meat sold in the outlets contained levels of drug-resistant bacteria that were harmful to the consumers.
This comes after they collected samples from leading supermarkets in five towns, namely Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nanyuki, and Eldoret, and did their experiments.
They warned of an impending pandemic if Kenyans do not take this cautionary research and avoid it.
They stated,”This could escalate to a silent pandemic since people who are affected by it fall sick but the available drugs cannot treat them. The bacteria resistant to drugs is known as the superbug.”
According to Victor Yamo, a scientist with World Animal Protection, the problem starts at the farm, where this animals are slaughtered and packaged.
He stated,” It is essential to enforce high standards of food hygiene and sanitation throughout the supply chain especially at the time of slaughter and package order to prevent the introduction of bacteria to the food and the subsequent spread of food borne pathogens.”
“If you eat the chicken, or pork from the supermarkets, especially those that have antimicrobial resistance genes, it is likely to be passed down to you,” he added.
Dr. Yano further warned if this trend continues, we are looking at Atleast 10 Million mortality rate yearly.
He stated,”If we do not use the antibiotics we have properly, we may lose a chance to protect people from.”
