Over 140K students set to miss HELB, Reason why.
Over 140K students set to miss HELB; The ministry says it has run out of cash to fund this students who rely on the higher education loans board fund.
This information was revealed by the HELB chief executive officer, Charles Ringera, who stated that the fund is exhausted and unfortunately some students will miss out.
Now, the burden is on parents who have children in Tertiary institutions, to dig deeper into their pockets and pay fees for their children.
Ringera stated,” Currently, we have 140,000 students in TVETS and universities that we have not been able to fund to the tune of ksh.5.7B.”
In his defence, Ringera told the education committee that they had made a request of ksh.4.5B to the treasury, but the delay has been on disbursement.
It is a hard time for students in tertiary institutions, this comes after the ministry of education also stated that they are reviewing the university fees to increase from 16, 000 to 48, 000 per year.
HELB loans has become a controversial topic, at a time when the head of state, president William Ruto stated that they have underway plans to abolish the HELB loans.
He said,” Instead of different funding systems, the government will establish the national skill and funding council( NSFC) that will amalgamate the existing funding bodies.”
The question remains, what will happen to students from humble backgrounds who can not survive without the HELB loans?
