They want to sell government enterprises, We are saying No- Raila condemns privatization.
Opposition leader, Raila Odinga has condemned the Cabinet’s move to give Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u powers to privatise state corporations.
This comes after the Privatisation Bill, 2023 which will repeal the Privatisation Act of 2005, was passed by the cabinet.
Azimio la umoja leader argued that the privatization act did not meet the constitutional criteria of passing through the National Assembly to be discussed first then passed.
The Cabinet on the other hand argued that the sale of non-strategic, non-performing public corporations will help improve the upgrade of infrastructure and the delivery of services to Kenyans.
They also added that privatization will also watch the demand for government resources and enhance more funds that will fuel the government’s development agenda.
Notably, the cabinet approved the government’s quest to negotiate commercial settlement for the Commercial Contracts and Financing Agreements for the Arror, Kimwarer and Itare Dams.
Raila stated,”On the other hand, they want to sell government enterprises without passing through Parliament. The government wants to sell public companies to their own people. We are saying no.”
Speaking at a burial ceremony in Kisii county, Raila insisted that the government has not right to sell public properties without lawmakers’ approval.
He further criticized president Ruto’s step to appoint the 50 chief administrative secretaries without vetting by the national parliament.
He stated,”The work of the Parliament is vetting. You cannot take up the role of Parliament and do it yourself.”
