The energy petroleum and regulation authority, EPRA exposes petrol stations selling fuel that is of low quality or added some other substances.
Through a notice issued by EPRA, on September 30, the authority warned that four stations distributed in different parts of the country were found to be selling adulterated fuel.
The listed stations include the ones in Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado and Bungoma.
A petrol station in Kiambu county faced a penalty of Ksh500,000 and ordered to adhere to the quality of fuel required by EPRA.
In Kajiado, a petrol station was shut down for an unspecified period. EPRA explained that the filling station was retailing diesel and super petrol adulterated with domestic kerosene and contains high amounts of sulphur.
In Machakos and Bungoma counties, the EPRA sealed all the super petrol dispensing pumps in the flagged filling stations.
EPRA notice said,”During the period July – September 2022, a total of 1,360 tests were conducted at 256 petroleum sites. From the tests, 98.44 per cent of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from four sites turned out to be non-compliant.”
Around the same period, EPRA found one station which was selling liquefied petroleum gas cylinders without proper licensing; The station is located off Enterprise Road in Nairobi.

EPRA said,”The authority maintains a hotline number (0709336000), operational during normal working hours to enhance enforcement and compliance activities.”
“Members of the public are requested to be vigilant and are encouraged to report any suspected cases of illegal trade of LPG in cylinders through the hotline number.” EPRA added.
Adulterated fuel puts both the motorist and passenger at risk.
