Kenyans cannot afford and should not be asked to pay extra taxes.
Opposition leader, Raila Odinga has opposed president Ruto’s move to increase tax inorder to generate more revenue for the Country.
Speaking during a press conference at the Serena Hotel on Wednesday, Azimio leader added that Kenyans are already suffering with the current economic trends, and should not be subjected to more burden.
He reminded the people that during the campaigns, the promise was to make Kenya move forward without compelling Kenyans to more tax.
He said,”The issue of raising taxes, Azimio and Kenya Kwanza promised Kenyans during the campaigns and made it clear that we would realise the promises we made without increasing the tax burden on Kenyans.”
“It remains our position that Kenyans cannot afford and should not be asked to pay extra taxes for the UDA regime to realise the unrealistic promises it is pursuing,” he added.
Azimio la Umoja further recalled in 2003 when the economy compared to current 2022, he stated that the government was able to realise its goals without increasing tax.
He said,”When Narc took power in 2003, the economy was worse, but we were able to put the country back on track including free primary education without raising taxes.”
Hon. Raila Odinga suggested that the government should source more revenue from Airports and other areas, instead of Kenyans, who are barely surviving.
He stated,”UDA has immediately shelved any thoughts of raising taxes from suffering Kenyans, instead UDA must increase revenue collection at all collection points like airports, V.A.T and so on.”
“The state must stop diversion of revenue and reform institutions like KRA, NSSF, NHIF and government procurement, deducting more money from workers and throwing it to the corrupt and mismanaged institutions won’t solve any problem,” he added
He also put it on record that the opposition will not support the increase of tax inorder to finance graft.
He stated,”We will resist any attempt by the government to raise taxes to finance corruption.”
