Opposition leader responds to Kuria’s sentiments on GMOs; Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga has opposed the reinstatement of genetically modified foods.
A statement from ODM said,”Party Leader Raila Odinga opposes the planned importation of GMO maize by the Ruto administration.”
Hon. Raila added that , because of the adverse effects caused by GMOs, they were resented by European countries, he urged parliament to take the lead and ensure GMOs are completely banned.
He stated,”GMO’s are dangerous to both human and animals lives and that they have been banned in major European countries and Americas. Parliament should take the lead on this matter.”
Azimio coalition leader, Raila Odinga further stated that Trade CS’ remarks on GMOs is a disregard to the lives of innocent Kenyans.
He stated,”Moses Kuria’s remarks on this matter are regrettable. To say that even without GMOs, Kenyans will die anyway is a mockery to the people of Kenya.”
ODM leader further empathized with the common mwananchi saying, GMOs will be a kick back to the farmers who are breaking their backs for fresh produce to the markets, being that GMOs will sell cheaply.
He said,”The directive will flood Kenyan market with cheap maize forcing farmers to sell their produce at a loss to match the competition.”
Raila additionally expressed his commitment to oppose this directive, for the common good of Kenyans.
He said,”We will oppose this directive and stand in solidarity with our farmers because they have invested a lot to grow maize and they cannot be impoverished by imported product.”
Kuria’s remarks on GMOs sparked a debate on the better part of Friday.
Kuria stated then,”Being in this country you are a candidate for death. And because there are many things competing for death, there is nothing wrong with adding GMOs to that list.”
