MP Lesuuda breaks down as she questions Kindiki on security in the North.
MP Lesuuda breaks down while narrating the security situation in the northern region.
This happened as vetting for the interior cabinet secretary nominee, Kithure Kindiki is underway.
Legislator Naisula Lesuuda questioned how Kindiki is planning to curb the rampant insecurity cases in the pastoralist region.
Hon. Naisula Lesuuda’s statement
Office holders do not comprehend the pain and losses caused by insecurity in the north. Cattle rustling is seen as a tradition and a people’s backward culture.
Kindly allow me to put this into context. Just yesterday when I was undertaking this important national duty, I received a text that criminals from my neighboring constituency ambushed herders, injured one person and drove away with cattle.
As if that was not enough, the criminals continued to be bolder by the day. This morning they attacked again. They killed one person, injured two people, one who is actually my staff and they have stolen goods.
On a normal day as a leader, I would have dropped everything, including this assignment, and rushed to my constituency to condole, bury and have local security meetings.
Then back to Nairobi, go to OP get a chopper, go for security meetings, calm is restored. Reiteration attacks most likely from my community will happen and the cycle continues.
This is a typical day of Kenyan Pastoralist living in a border with another pastoralist. The only time when the country acts shocked is when we loose a security personnel, and that’s when they are two or three.
When will one life be too many to loose in the northern part of this country?
Kithure responded,”I will make whatever sacrifices required, even if it means coming to live in the north rift. When criminals, cattle rustlers, terrorists don’t fear government, the culture of raiding and killing civilians and police persists; then legitimacy of the state is at stake.”
“As soon as I take office, the number one assignment is to ensure we set our country free from bandits, terrorists and cattle rustlers,”Kindiki added.
