Search for Survivors as a 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Taiwan: At least nine people have been confirmed dead and a thousand others injured after the quake that struck on Wednesday Morning.
In an update from the National Fire Agency, 1,038 people had been injured, while 52 were missing and can not be contacted . The death toll remained at nine.
According to videos circulating online, rescuers were using drones and helicopters to search for people thought to be trapped in the Taroko National park.
About 38 workers on their way to a hotel in the park remain missing after some of their colleagues were found safe.
A survivor has recounted how tremors unleashed rockslides “like bullets” in the coal mine he was working.
He stated,” “The mountain started raining rocks like bullets, we had nowhere to escape to, everyone ran beside the sandbags for cover.”
This is the strongest Earthquake since 1999, where a 7.6 magnitude quake killed 2,400 people and over 10,000 were injured.
Taiwan is located in tectonic boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate, so they are used to earthquakes and well-prepared for them.
However, they expected a far weaker quake and units monitoring the earth quakes, did not send out their usual alert.
